Metro Nashville Planning seeks input on Global Mall development – Tennessee Lookout - Tennessee Lookout

Metro Nashville officials are asking residents to help shape the future of Global Mall to serve Antioch’s needs.

Since purchasing the building, Mayor John Cooper and City Council member Joy Styles have sought to turn the former mall and surrounding area into a community center providing much-needed infrastructure for Antioch residents.

Metro officials noted that Southeast Nashville, which houses a large immigrant population, changed significantly over the past decade. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Antioch grew by more than 77,000 residents since 2010.

“The 2020 Census showed us that the Southeast Nashville area is growing rapidly,” said Lucy Kempf, executive director of metro planning, in a statement. “With Metro’s recent purchase of the Global Mall, we have another important opportunity to work with those who live, work and play in this area to ensure what is built here serves the residents of today and tomorrow.”

Antioch’s growing population needs infrastructure. Metro officials plan to turn Global Mall into a space to house a performing arts center, after-school youth programming, childcare and small business development opportunities, among other assets.

On Nov. 17, metro officials will conduct three public workshops with various maps and stations to gather public feedback for the site’s future. Officials will also conduct additional events and stakeholder meetings to ensure the Global Mall becomes a neighborhood asset that supports community needs.

“Now is a great time to be in Antioch, with all of the significant development taking place. It has been a long journey and definitely overdue, but we are still just at the beginning. We need everyone to attend this meeting, participate in this planning study and provide their input,” said Styes.

The Global Mall Community Vision Workshop will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17,  from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nashville Public Library Southeast Branch.
