Ysleta School District initiates strategic planning to attract and retain students - KFOX El Paso

The Yselta School District (YISD) began its Strategic Plan process today. The District's Board said this twice-a-decade Plan was vital to keeping student enrollment numbers up.

"We have to compete every day parents, their students, they are customers, they are our clients, and they're looking for the best value and we have to be the best value," YISD Superintendent Xavier De La Torre told KFOX14.

The plan will outline high-level objectives for the District over the next five years. The District's previous Strategic Action Plan included broad goals such as "High Academic Achievement leading to Postsecondary Readiness" and "provide attractive services, benefits, and professional development to increase retention among highly qualified staff."

YISD enters this review period with declining student numbers but overall better financial health than some of their peers in El Paso.

"Some of the neighboring districts are struggling with governance issues," De La Torre said. "I think there's a disconnect sometimes between leadership and governance. (white flash) I've been in the district 10 years, most of the trustees here today have been with me for the majority of those years."

Today's meeting was the first of five such meetings, with the next coming in July.
