City of Lincoln turning to community members to plan future University Place improvements - KOLN

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The city of Lincoln wants to make changes to University Place neighborhood starting in 2025, and they are basing their plans on input from those who live there.

The subarea plan looking to make improvements to the neighborhood took place Tuesday evening at First Methodist Church. There, Lincoln/Lancaster County Planning Department members took suggestions from community members on what kind of projects they want to see in the area.

What those projects will be is still undecided, and will be determined based on the suggestions that community members provide.

“We’re not coming in with any preconceived ideas of we want to do this or this,” Andrew Thieroff, a city planner with the department, said. “We’re really looking for input in what people would like to see. We really just want to hear from residents, business owners, other people interested in the neighborhood, what they want to see in University Place.”

It will be the first major improvement project headed by the department in the the area since a similar subarea plan in 2004.

“The north part of the city can be a little bit ignored,” Joe Shaw, Executive Director of Lux Center for the Arts, said. “So it’s great that they’re focusing on this wonderful old neighborhood. We have a historic downtown. We would love to see it renovated and brought back to life.”

For those that were unable to attend the initial meeting, a virtual open house on the planning department’s website will take suggestions through the end of the summer. When that closes, plans for the improvement projects will be finalized, with a full proposal set to be released to the public in January of 2025.
