Planning and Zoning approves 349-unit, mixed-use development off Smokey Park Highway - WLOS

The project, called Acton Hill, was approved for a conditional zoning request by the city planning and zoning board on June 6.

The site is located across the highway from the Buncombe Sports Park. It's set to consist of 349 resident units, a grocery store that was referred to as Aldi at the meeting, and plenty for commercial and mixed-use development.

"This is designed for folks to live in and be residents in and have a community. There are a number of parks. Dog parks, playground, pool, clubhouse, gazebo, mail kiosk, grilling areas," attorney Derek Allen, who represents the applicant, said during the June 6 meeting. "There are over two miles of sidewalks internal to this project. There's a half a mile of walk paths internal to this project. And that’s all very intentional to make it feel, look, and operate like a community."

The development will back up an already existing development called Acton Woods Apartments.

Nearby residents said that crews have been working on clearing this area for a few months, but Acton Hill is due for final approval with Asheville City Council on June 25.
