Bluffton Planning Commission approves townhomes at Washington Square - Bluffton Today

The town of Bluffton's planning commission approved the preliminary plan for a new townhome development Jan 26.

Washington Square Townhomes will be an addition to the Washington Square development on Buckwalter Parkway. The project consists of 58 townhomes within 18 individual buildings. Access to the townhomes will be along Bleecker Street.

Commission member Rich DelCore shared concerns about parking space at the townhomes. DelCore said that because the units will have two to three bedrooms, there could be a shortage of parking spaces. He noted the area will have a lot of foot traffic and vehicles parked on the street could impact that.

Dan Keefer, with Witmer Jones Keefer, spoke on behalf of the applicant and said each townhome will have a two-car driveway as well as a garage that can fit one car. He said street parking will only be allowed for guests.

Kathleen Duncan, another member of the commission, said the proposed design of the sides of the townhomes looks like "the broadside of the barn." She requested that the applicant, Logan Homes SC LLC, try to give the sides of the townhomes more detail and landscaping.

"This is a high-quality development and it's going to be a gem for the town of Bluffton," Duncan said. "To have something going that just looks like it's meeting the bare minimum standards is such a struggle for me."

Town documents state that Washington Square Townhomes will be built and developed in one phase.

The Washington Square development is located within Buckwalter Commons and is zoned in the Buckwalter planned unit development.

The townhomes will be behind Lowcountry Fresh Market & Café on 6.9 acres and will be part of the Washington Square Commercial Subdivision, a mixed-use development.

Buckwalter Commons, also referred to as Buckwalter Place, houses residential lots and commercial developments, and recently became home to the Culinary Institute of the South. The development was first proposed in the 2000s on 94 acres, according to the town.
